# Characteristic

> A characteristic: a property such as material or colour with which items are described. A characteristic has a list of values; items are assigned one or more of them. The characteristic carries its name per language, how it behaves and is presented, and the groups it belongs to.

## Fields

**`id`**: `ID!`

The ID of the characteristic.

**`names`**: `[CharacteristicName!]!`

The names per language. The name in the default language is always present.

**`displayType`**: `String!`

How the values are presented to customers in the online shop: TEXT, SELECT_BOX, IMAGE or IMAGE_AND_TEXT. It changes how the values are shown, not which fields exist. The list can grow with the shops; a client treats a value it does not know like TEXT. An empty or unknown stored value is read as TEXT.

**`isMultiSelect`**: `Boolean!`

Indicates that several values of the characteristic can be assigned to one item. Online shops offer several selections in the filter navigation.

**`isVisibleInShop`**: `Boolean!`

Indicates that the characteristic is shown to customers in the online shop.

**`isEbayAttribute`**: `Boolean!`

Indicates that the characteristic is transferred to eBay as an item specific.

**`sortOrder`**: `Int`

The position of the characteristic among all characteristics in a custom order, counted from 1. Null means there is no custom order and the entries are sorted alphabetically by their name in the default language. Set a custom order with the order operations; the API does not accept single positions.

**`image`**: `CharacteristicImage`

The image of the characteristic, shown when the display type includes images. Absent when it has none.

**`groups`**: `[CharacteristicGroupAssignment!]!`

The characteristic groups the characteristic belongs to. A characteristic can belong to several groups.

**`valueCount`**: `Int!`

The number of values of the characteristic.

---

**`itemCount`**: `Int!`

The number of items that have at least one value of the characteristic.
