ItemType
The kind of an item. The kinds exclude each other: an item is exactly one of them for its whole life. Being a combination of a variation parent is not a kind and is not visible on the item itself: the parent owns that relation. New kinds are added over time, so a consumer has to tolerate values it does not know and treat such an item through the properties every item has.

A regular sellable item without stock management and without further structure.
An item whose stock is managed in whole units, with optional batch, shelf life expiration date or serial number tracking.
An item whose stock is managed in fractional quantities, for example 2.5 units. Serial number tracking is not possible.
An item whose stock is managed in subsets (German 'Teilmengen'), each with its own subset number. It needs a dimension set with a value per dimension and a reservation. Neither serial numbers nor batch nor shelf life expiration dates are possible.
A bill of materials (German 'Stückliste'): sold as a set of component items. It has no stock management and no purchasing of its own and inherits its stock behavior from its components.
The parent of a variation combination. It holds the variation axes, is not sold itself and has neither own price nor own stock. The items that are its combinations are read through its sub-resource and are items of any kind except a variation parent.
An item the customer configures by choosing components from configuration groups.
A voucher item whose voucher is redeemed once against a single, already known tax rate.
A voucher item whose voucher can be redeemed against any goods and is therefore not taxed when sold.
A packaging item (German 'Kartonage') used when shipping. It is stock-managed and not sold to customers.
